WALES 12 - 6 SOUTH AFRICA
Millennium Stadium - Saturday 29 November 2014
KO: 14:30 HT: 3-3 Att: 58,235
SO, Wales finally overcame their southern hemisphere hoodoo today. This was an attritional encounter, and an absorbing one, as the balance of power shifted and changed. Wales had enough possession and territory that they really should have put the Springboks away in this game, but there were no tries on the board and the final result came down to the kicking accuracy of Leigh Halfpenny and Pat Lambie.

Wales made three enforced changes to their starting line up for this match. Liam Williams stepped in for the injured George North on the wing, while prop Gethin Jenkins and hooker Scott Baldwin replaced Paul James and Richard Hibbard respectively due to club commitments as the match fell outside the official Autumn Test window. South Africa made five changes; Willie le Roux, Cornal Hendricks and Lwazi Mvovo took over from JP Pietersen, Brian Habana and Johan Goosen in the back three as the former returned to their clubs, and there were two rotational changes in the front row with Adriaan Strauss and Trevor Nyakane dropping the bench, replaced by “the Beast” Tendai Mtawarira and the experienced Bismarck du Plessis.
Wales were desperate to finish their Autumn International series with a win against the Southern Hemisphere side, but some poor performances in the November Tests meant South Africa also had some serious motivation to perform.
A hard-fought first half started with some good possession by Wales in the opening few minutes, which led to a straightforward penalty against South Africa for not releasing that Leigh Halfpenny duly put through the posts. South Africa countered with a decent break down the wing by Mvovo, and then equalised through a Pat Lambie penalty on 10 minutes. Just a few minutes later Leigh Halfpenny hit the post with a penalty attempt for Wales.
Twice Wales put Liam Williams into chase good chip kicks, but with similar results - South Africa had to take the ball into touch in the corner each time, yet Wales could not capitalise, and turned over ball.
On the half hour, a poor Welsh lineout saw Scott Baldwin overthrow and the Springboks were able to steal the ball and make a good run down the pitch. Wales snuffed out the attack illegally and Lambie went for the posts with the resulting penalty kick but missed the kick.
South Africa continued to attack and it took a great tackle by Leigh Halfpenny to bring down Eben Etzebeth when the lock seemed clean through.

The first half was brought to a close with some sloppy play by South Africa, which allowed Rhys Webb kick the ball into touch. Wales had definitely enjoyed more opportunities but not been able to convert that into points on the board, so ended 3-3.
The second half began with the same intensity, and a successful penalty for Wales in the 46th minute was almost immediately cancelled out as Lambie kicked a monster penalty from the halfway line to make it 6-6. South Africa then gave away another penalty for illegal entry at the breakdown whilst attacking in the Welsh half, and Halfpenny took the three points to ease Wales ahead once more.
Another penalty for Wales followed when they took the Springboks apart at the scrum, and again Halfpenny converted. From the restart, Springbok captain Jean de Villiers collided with Welsh No.8 Taulupe Faletau, twiting his left knee, and there followed a long break in play as the injured de Villiers had to be stretchered from the pitch, later diagnosed as a dislocated knee cap.

With twenty minutes to go, the pace became even more frantic and both teams had good scoring opportunities with Wales attacking in the corner and then under the posts to no avail, followed by a great Bok break that Wales managed to push into touch. Cornal Hendricks was shown a yellow card for taking Halfpenny out in the air, although the replays suggested both players had gone for the ball. Halfpenny left the field soon afterwards, replaced by Scott Williams.
The tension built as time ticked down, and Wales in particular failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities. In the closing minutes, an error by Scott Williams led to a Springbok 5m scrum and the crowd held its collective breath, but the Welsh pack repelled the attack and cleared the ball upfield. This time the Welsh remained calm and kept South Africa in their own half until IRFU referee John Lacey’s whistle signalled the end of the game to a huge roar from the Millennium Stadium crowd.
Dan Biggar was rightly named man of the match for an excellent performance in both attack and defence.
In the post match press conference, Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland and captain Sam Warburton emphasised that whilst this was a great win for Wales, the Autumn Internationals have been totally focused on preparing for RWC2015. Wales are certainly pleased with this victory, but it remains to be seen whether they can now keep converting winning opportunities against top-class opposition.
